Michael Piepkorn Endowed Chair in Dermatology Research
Est. 2011
The Michael Piepkorn Endowed Chair in Dermatology Research was established in 2011 to enhance the University’s ability to attract and retain distinguished faculty in dermatology.
Dr. Michael W. Piepkorn completed two residencies at UW Medicine: one in pathology in 1978 and one in dermatology in 1980. He graduated from the UW with a Ph.D. in pathology in 1980 and had a joint faculty appointment in the Division of Dermatology and the Department of Pathology during the 1990s. Dr. Piepkorn is now in private practice, and he maintains a connection with UW Medicine as a clinical professor in the Department of Medicine.
In his 20-year career in academic medicine, Dr. Piepkorn saw how difficult it was for researchers to acquire funding for their projects — particularly researchers in mid-career. For this reason, Dr. Piepkorn is establishing a chair that he hopes will attract mature, productive researchers who will make significant contributions to dermatologic research, and whose work will enhance UW Medicine's prominence in the field.
