Endowed Chair in Women's Sports Medicine and Lifetime Fitness
The Endowed Chair in Women’s Sports Medicine and Lifetime Fitness was established in 2000 to attract and retain a distinguished faculty member who would study women’s sports-related injuries.
The chair is based in the Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, and it was created to help redress the gap in medical information for active women and girls. According to Dr. Frederick A. Matsen III, professor and former chair of the department, female college athletes are four times more likely than men to suffer an injury that will end their season, and at least six times more likely to have a problem that requires surgery.
