April Stempien-Otero, M.D.
Craig Tall Family Endowed Professor in Heart Failure Research
Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Cardiology
Biography
Dr. Stempien-Otero received a B.A. from Dartmouth College and an M.D. from the University of Connecticut. She received training in internal medicine at the University of Virginia, where she served as chief resident, and completed a cardiology fellowship at UW Medicine.
Dr. Stempien-Otero is a cardiologist with expertise in congestive heart failure and cardiac transplantation. She directs a research lab that studies the role of bone marrow-derived cells in cardiac repair and regeneration. These studies range from understandng the basic mechanisms by which circulating bone marrow cells direct scar formation in the heart, to a phase 1 clinical trial in which these cells are injected into patients with end-stage heart failure. (These volunteers are awaiting heart transplants; in the meantime, they use left ventricular assist devices to survive.)
