Farhood Farjah, M.D., MPH
Endowed Chair in Lung Cancer Research
Associate Professor, Department of Surgery
Dr. Farhood Farjah is a thoracic surgeon, clinical investigator, and educator. He trained in cardiothoracic surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Farjah is currently an Associate Professor in the UW Department of Surgery.
Dr. Farjah’s clinical interest is thoracic oncology and he has expertise in both complex and minimally-invasive thoracic surgery as well as endoscopy. He is part of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance Thoracic Oncology Group that cares for patients with lung cancer, mesothelioma, rare tumors of the lung and chest wall, and metastases to the lung. Dr. Farjah is also a member of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance Esophageal Cancer Team. In addition to his local efforts, he is a Panel Member for the National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines on esophageal and gastric cancer.
Dr. Farjah’s research interests are in lung cancer diagnostics, quality-improvement, and value-optimization. He is the principal investigator of a National Cancer Institute (NCI) funded comparative-effectiveness study evaluating the efficacy, safety, and costs of guideline-recommended diagnostic evaluation of incidentally (not screen) detected lung nodules. This study builds on his work as a Cancer Research Network Scholar. Dr. Farjah has also received funding from the CHEST Foundation and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Consortium to develop and validate prediction models to optimize the value of cancer diagnostics. Much of Dr. Farjah’s past research has critically evaluated the delivery and outcomes of lung cancer in the United States, and he played a lead role in establishing one of the first regional quality improvement and research collaboratives in thoracic surgery. Dr. Farjah is also an Affiliate Investigator at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute. He is on the Editorial Board for the Annals of Thoracic Surgery and an Associate Statistical Editor for the Journal of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Farjah has served on review committees for the Thoracic Surgery Foundation, CHEST Foundation Research Grant in Lung Cancer, and Cancer Research Network Scholars Program. He is currently on the Board of Directors for the Surgical Outcomes Club.
Dr. Farjah is committed to teaching the next generation of thoracic surgeons and clinical investigators. He is the Associate Medical Director of the UW Medicine Surgical Outcome Research Center where his main role is to mentor surgical residents enrolled in a National Institutes of Health funded post-doctoral outcomes research fellowship (NIDDK T32 Program; PI David R. Flum). Dr. Farjah is also Associate Program Director for the UW Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Programs.
