Dr. Grant Hughes graduated from Oregon Health & Science University and completed his internship, internal medicine residency and rheumatology fellowship at the UW School of Medicine, where he was mentored by Robert Willkens, M.D. In 2009, Dr. Hughes succeeded Dr. Willkens as head of the rheumatology section at Harborview Medical Center.
Always fascinated by the immune system, Dr. Hughes completed a post-doctoral research fellowship under the mentorship of Edward A. Clark, Ph.D. Dr. Hughes studied the influence of reproductive hormones on inflammation and lupus autoimmunity and for several years thereafter maintained a research lab while treating patients and teaching. Today, he devotes his efforts to running the UW rheumatology training program, caring for patients at Harborview and UW Medical Center, mentoring trainees with research projects in clinical immunology and teaching clinical immunology at the UW School of Medicine.
Before his career in medicine, Dr. Hughes worked in outdoor education, running traveling and camp-based science programs for the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. He maintains an avid interest in outdoor activities such as fly-fishing, hiking and soccer; he also loves literature and music.
