Biography
After his urology residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Dr. Wessells completed a fellowship in genitourinary reconstructive surgery and trauma at the University of California, San Francisco.
He is a surgeon, researcher and expert on urogenital trauma, reconstructive surgery, and erectile dysfunction. Dr. Wessells’s research interests range from acute kidney and pelvic injury to the urological complications of diabetes, focusing on strategies to reduce the burden of disease through improved prediction and prevention. He has served on national and international professional and government committees defining the optimal management of urological conditions, including erectile and sexual dsyfunction, prostate cancer, genitourinary trauma and urethral stricture disease.
Dr. Wessells serves on the Advisory Committee for Urology of the American College of Surgeons, the AUA Legislative and Guidelines Panels for Urotrauma, and is associate editor of the International Journal of Impotence Research. He previously served as a member of the Urological Kidney and Genital Development Study Section of the National Institutes of Health and the Examination Committee of the American Board of Urology/American Urological Association.
An avid outdoors sportsman, Dr. Wessells rows a single shell, enjoys summer cycling climbs on Mount St. Helens and Mt. Rainier, and maintains an organic vegetable garden.
