John Olerud, M.D., earned a B.S. in zoology from Washington State University (WSU), where he was named to the NCAA All-American Baseball Team in 1965. He received an M.D. from the UW School of Medicine in 1971, and he is board certified in dermatology and internal medicine.
Dr. Olerud is expert in wound healing, cutaneous lymphoma and medical dermatology. He joined UW Medicine’s dermatology faculty in 1978 and was named the George F. Odland Professor of Medicine in 1995. Since 1988, Dr. Odland has served as head of the Division of Dermatology in the Department of Medicine. He’s the director of the NIH T32 Grant titled “Training for Investigative Dermatology,” and he’s an active principal investigator.
Dr. Olerud serves on the WSU Foundation Board of Trustees. He is a member of the Association of Professors of Dermatology, serving on the board of directors and as president (2004–2006), and he led the development of the organization’s 2010 strategic plan. Dr. Olerud has been a member of the American Skin Association, Scientific Advisory Committee, and has served as a member of the board of directors and as vice president of the Society for Investigative Dermatology. He was a charter member of the Advisory Board of Prosthetic Research Study Group inSeattle.
His research interests include percutaneous biomaterials, human wound healing, wound biofilm models and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Dr. Olerud’s clinical interests include cutaneous lymphoma, skin manifestations of internal diseases and diabetes, leg ulcers, and connective tissue diseases. He has been repeatedly selected as one of Seattle’s Top Doctors by Seattle Magazine. In addition, Dr. Olerud received the Washington State University Regents Distinguished Alumnus Award in December 10, 2011, and he’s a member of the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame.
