Michele Curatolo, M.D., Ph.D.

Michele Curatolo received his M.D. in Italy and continued his career in Switzerland, where he held an associate professorship at the University of Bern. He received a Ph.D. in Biomedical Science and Engineering at the University of Aalborg in Denmark. In 2014, Dr. Curatolo also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Aalborg.
Dr. Curatolo was head of the Division of Pain Therapy in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Therapy at the University of Bern and acting chair of the department. He has served in a variety of leading roles in academic and political institutions.
Dr. Curatolo’s expertise is in pain management, education and research, and he is the author of over 160 publications in these areas. He is currently studying how to detect and prevent hypersensitivity of pain pathways in the central nervous system in patients with chronic pain, which is expected to lead to better understanding and treatment.
