William C. Butts, Ph.D. Fund for Medical Technology
EST.2008
William C. Butts, M.D., Fel. ’73, started work at Group Health in 1976 as the chemist for the clinical laboratory, and he served in a number of leadership capacities over the years. In 1999, he became the director for Group Health’s laboratory system. In the 1970s, Dr. Butts and a core group of colleagues created a revolutionary integrated clinical lab system model. This model required that state-of-the-art services be available on site in clinic and hospital labs — while the system also maintained a centralized reference lab. This is now the model for integrated health systems. This scholarship, created by the Group Health Foundation, will provide funds to students in the Department of Laboratory Medicine’s Medical Technology Program. It will also honor Dr. Butts’ many contributions to his field. Dr. Butts died in 2001.
