Course Description:
This one-day course will bring together 500 University of Washington School of Medicine and Dentistry basic science and clinical faculty located throughout the five-state Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WWAMI) region to engage in learning, sharing techniques for improving teaching and outcomes for students, and discussing course development and content. The theme for this year’s meeting is professionalism and the meeting will take a retrospective look at professionalism in the School of Medicine over the past twenty years, look at current approaches to professionalism critical to the practice of medicine, and a look forward to professionalism in the 21st century. Workshops are designed toward improving outcomes in teaching, evaluation, giving feedback, using technology, and professionalism.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this program, attendees should be able to:
- Define the concept of professionalism and describe how to apply it to academic medicine practices
- Discuss challenges to the implementation of professionalism
- Identify what data and contacts are available in the School of Medicine to improve CQI efforts across the basic science and clinical curriculum
- Discuss School of Medicine admissions processes, goals and outcomes
- Describe techniques and strategies for effectively teaching surgical skills in the Operating room
- Recognize cross-cultural differences and how to avoid cross-cultural communication mishaps
- Define what a stereotype threat is and explore different approaches to lessen the threat
- Describe potential applications of Audience Response Systems across the basic science and clinical curriculum
- Describe at least two strategies to improve time management
- Identify what constitutes unprofessional behavior in the teacher/learner relationship
- Discuss how online tools can help instructors reach their teaching goals and objectives
- Describe the general structure of multiple choice test items that measure problem solving and integration skills
- Describe how to write concise measurable learning objectives covering the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains
- Articulate the School of Medicine’s performance-based teaching and assessment offerings that all students will encounter during medical school
- Define the planning requirements that allow for efficient and effective class size expansion while maintaining education quality
Who Should Attend:
All faculty teaching in the medical and dental school curriculum throughout the WWAMI states.
Accreditation:
The University of Washington School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The University of Washington School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 6.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
