Chapter Biography

Expansion to the University of Washington! For generations, Phi Delta Theta has been asking the question, Are You a Leader? This was first asked at the University of Washington in 1901, when the Washington Alpha chapter became the third fraternity on campus in Seattle. Phi Delta Theta has set the standard for fraternal excellence at UW for over 100 years, fostering an elite environment for the cultivation of gentlemen, scholars and athletes. In 1936, the chapter was home to the world's fastest swimmer, Olympic Gold Medalist Jack Medica. At one time, Medica held 11 world records in distances ranging from 220 yards to one mile. He was never defeated in an NCAA race, and placed third in the team championships as the lone competitor for the University of Washington. In addition to numerous Olympic, NBA and NFL athletes, Fortune 500 company founders and civic leaders across the nation have passed through the doors of the historic chapter house at 2111 NE 47th St. UW Phis have been in the Governors mansion (Washington Governor Booth Gardner), in the daily comic section (Hank Ketchum, creator of Dennis the Menace), and at the cutting edge of technology and commerce (K2 Founder William Kirschner and Tully's Coffee Founder Tom O'Keefe). The opportunity to become a Founding Father allows students to develop a positive fraternity experience and work towards establishing a great reputation on campus. Becoming a Founding Father at UW will also provide you with a professional network of more than 160,000 alumni living throughout North America. For many of Phi Delta Theta's Founding Fathers, their experience allows them to hone their personal leadership skills and prepare for life after college. With our return in 2009, Phi Delta Theta offers a unique opportunity for young leaders to follow in the footsteps of Jack Medica, William Kirschner, and nearly 2,500 UW alumni to answer the question: Are You a Leader?
