HAI staff have been active in Côte d’Ivoire (CI) since 1991, working on several assessment and research projects in partnership with the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire and the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) in Abidjan.

A series of military coups, civil war and fragmentation of the country starting in 1999 undermined HAI’s work and presence in the country. However, when the situation improved in 2005, HAI staff returned to provide technical support to the District Health Office of Bouaké, the largest city in the formerly rebel-controlled northern region.

HAI worked with the Ministry of Health and other partners to conduct a needs assessment in 2007 and continues to assist in developing a collaborative framework for re-establishing primary health care in the region. As part of the effort to rebuild the conflict-damaged health care infrastructure and attract health care workers back to Bouaké and the Bandama Valley, the HAI team in Côte d’Ivoire is implementing a UNICEF-funded project to scale up HIV prevention and treatment services for pregnant women and their children within the public health care system.
