The Mozambique Health Committee was originally founded in 1987 by a group of international “cooperantes”, or collaborators, at the request of the Government of Mozambique. The original focus of the organization, now known as Health Alliance International (HAI), was to support the rebuilding of the severely damaged health infrastructure in the central region, after a decade-long armed conflict.
After 20 years of working in Mozambique, programmatic activities have expanded to include HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health interventions and malaria. However, the focus on strengthening the national public health infrastructure remains a basic tenet of the organization.
HAI currently has field offices in Chimoio, Manica Province, and in Beira, Sofala Province, where we work closely with the district-level and provincial-level officials of the Ministry of Health (MOH). HAI is also supporting the Ministry of Health’s Operations Research Center in Beira. Our Maputo office works closely with national MOH departments, particularly the Department of Medical Care, which oversees the national scale-up of HIV/AIDS treatment and care.
