Timor-Leste
Community Partnering
Timor-Leste Ministry of Health is HAI's key partner in this program. HAI supports a Ministry of Health (MOH) District Program Officer in each of the program districts who is part of the District Health Management Teams and links with
MOH midwives and community groups. Training activities are conducted with staff of the
MOH's Institute for Health Sciences.
HAI also works with a variety on local and international organizations in Timor-Leste:
- The Alola Foundation works for the advancement of the women of Timor-Leste, with a focus on advocacy, economic empowerment, education and literacy, maternal and child health and humanitarian assistance. HAI Collaborates closely with Alola on activities relating to breastfeeding and mother support groups.
- Bibi Bulak is a widely known theater arts troupe of Timor-Leste. The group writes and produces plays, music, educational radio dramas, and short films with the goal to promote public education through the dramatic and media arts. Bibi Bulak is linked to the Arte Moris Free Art School in the capital city, Dili. HAI works with Bibi Bulak to develop dramas promoting maternal and newborn health for performance in rural areas and in Dili. Bibi Bulak and HAI also collaborate to train local, district-based groups in street-theater.
- Cooperativa Café Timor (CCT Information, PDF file, 764k) is a local organic coffee cooperative of independent farmers that has been supported for many years by USAID. CCT buys, processes, and markets certified organic coffee in Timor-Leste. Additional CCT projects include primary healthcare, agricultural extension services, a tree nursery, and a training center for small businesses and other cooperatives. CCT has recently begun to broaden its work to health promotion, and HAI provides technical support and supervision for CCT's maternal/newborn care educational activities.
- Juventude Haburas Saude-Liquica is a community-based group in Liquica District that is active in promoting health throughout the district. HAI has worked with JHS to develop a street-theater project to promote Maternal and Newborn Health in the rural areas of Liquica. With technical training provided by Bibi Bulak, JHS performs in Liquica district and also receives requests from a variety of organizations in other parts of the country.
- SHARE is a Japanese health NGO working in Ermera District. HAI collaborates with SHARE on activities of common interest. such as the expansion of a health promotion flip chart to include maternal and newborn health messages.
- TAIS (a joint project of BASICS3 and ImmunizationBASICS in Timor-Leste) supports the MOH in improving child health services and community practices for child health in Timor-Leste. Newborn care is an important area of common interest to both HAI and TAIS. HAI and TAIS are working to coordinate maternal and newborn health activities with child health services, and also aim to coordinate expansion activities in new districts.
- United Nations Agencies:
- UNICEF supports safe motherhood training, maternal tetanus immunization, and other maternal/newborn care services
- UNFPA The United Nations Population Fund (formerly United Nations Fund for Population Activities) promotes family planning and improved emergency obstetric care, including equipping and supplying health facilities.
- The World Health Organization (WHO) provides technical support in maternal/neonatal health interventions and updated health status information
