General Information

UW Catalog Course No. SLN: 10346

Course Description: Fundamentals of Aramaic grammar and the differences that distinguish Aramaic from Hebrew, includes select Aramaic portions of the Bible. Emphasis on grammar and comprehension. Designed for students with some knowledge of Hebrew. In this course we will read all of the Biblical Aramaic texts in this order:

  1. Genesis 31:47 (2 words)
  2. Jeremiah 10:11
  3. Ezra 4:8 - 6:18 and 7:12-28
  4. Daniel 2:4 - 7:28

In addition we will read adjacent sections in Hebrew as noted on the Syllabus page.

  • In addition, students should have the Biblical Aramaic texts of the latest edition of BHS (Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia) and a lexicon (either BDB or HALOT)

Grading

  • Class participation and preparedness: 15%
  • 9 Assignments (5% each / 45% total)
    Assignments will be graded for completeness and accuracy
  • Exam 1: 20%
    Wednesday, April 18. In class.
  • Exam 2: 20%
    Wednesday, May 30 or Friday, June 1: TBD. In class.
