Course Description: Surveys Northwest Semitic inscriptions that bear significantly on our understanding of Biblical history and ancient Hebrew including the Moabite stone, Israelite ostraca, Siloam engraving, Gezer calendar, Deir Alla (Gilead) inscriptions, the Asherah texts, and Phoenician monuments. Prerequisite: HEBR 402 or HEBR 426.

Grading
- 2 Exams: 40% (20% each)
- Translation of inscription assigned for each class period: 40%.
Due at the beginning of the class period in which the inscription is covered.
- Presentation of an inscription: 20%
Each student will be responsible for presenting an inscription from KAI or another source not covered on the syllabus. The inscription is to be approved by me by the end of the fourth week of the quarter. Rough drafts are due by the end of the eighth week of the quarter. Presentations will be held the last week of the quarter. Each presenter will provide a copy of the final paper to the class. You are welcome to use PowerPoint to accompany the paper. The presentation is to cover:
1) Details of discovery
2) Archaeological context
3) Historical background/setting
4) Dating issues
5) Controversies in connection with the inscription, if any
6) Significance of the inscription for Northwest Semitics and Biblical studies.
7) Translation and grammatical notes
The length of the inscription must be at least 20 complete words.
Papers should be at least 5 pages of text.
Incorporate in addition images and graphics as appropriate to your inscription.
