General Information

UW Catalog Course No. NEAR E 496C, SLN: 16262 & SISJE 490C, SLN 17975

Course Description:
This course is an introduction to the historical-critical study of the Torah/Pentateuch. Beginning with a survey of the content and structure of the 5 books that comprise the Pentateuch (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy), the course then examines a wide range of problems, theories and methods with which modern scholarship on the Pentateuch and its composition is engaged. The primary text for the course is Jean-Louis Ska's Introduction to Reading the Pentateuch (Winona Lake, Ind.: Eisenbrauns, 2006). The 10 chapters of Ska's text will be covered a chapter per week during the 10-week quarter. Additional readings referred to in Ska will be assigned, providing a better understanding of, and a deeper appreciation for, major issues that surface in a critical reading of the Pentateuch.

No knowledge of the Bible or Hebrew is required. No prerequisites.

See the "Syllabus" page for a weekly outline of topics covered.
