The Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity is seeking a Graduate Research Assistant to assist in planning and implementing a diversity plan for the University of Washington. The RA will work with the University Diversity Council, which is the primary advisory committee to the President on matters of diversity and equity at all three UW campuses. Members of the Diversity Council include members of the University administration, staff and faculty members; undergraduate and graduate students representing student groups and student government; and members of the community with an interest in diversity in higher education. Council members share diversity best practices, engage in institutional diversity planning, and make recommendations to University administration about student, faculty and staff diversity; inclusive climate and curriculum; and institutional transformation. This position also assists in planning and managing all events, research, and projects of the University Diversity Council. The RA reports to the Diversity Council Coordinator.

Sensors, Energy, and Automation Laboratory at the Department of Electrical
Engineering, University of Washington, is a research organization focused on
the design of sensors for biomedical applications, industrial automation,
and energy efficiency. The lab has a part-time position of a grant writer.
Duties include assistance with processing research proposals, project
communication with team members, proofreading, and technical writing.

Direct experience is not necessary, as training is available, however, the
expectations are high with regards to applicant’s abilities and motivation.
Very interesting job for someone who wants to become a professional grant
writer and/or enter the field of entrepreneurship.

The applicant must meet the following requirements:
- Native American English speaker
- Excellent writing skills
- Excellent oral communication
- Highly organized
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Windows

Desired, but not necessary requirements:
- Experience with graphics design
- Experience with Reference Manager or EndNote

photographing in a photojournalism style that conveys the appropriate
message.

Reports to the Public Information Specialist.

Successful intern will:

* Have a great, creative eye for photojournalism and a portfolio to
back it up (or the beginnings of one);
* Take initiative and be proactive about setting up photo shoots;

RA with The Center for Workforce Development: Evaluation & Data Analysis

The Center for Workforce Development (CWD) at the University of Washington is seeking a graduate research assistant. CWD creates customized programs to develop the workforce through recruitment, retention, and advancement strategies. The Center conducts research and evaluation in the areas of gender and ethnic diversity in science and engineering. Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) is one of the divisions of CWD. The graduate research assistant position (20 hours/week) will be available starting Winter Quarter 2009.

The graduate research assistant reports to the Director for New & International Initiatives in the Center for Workforce Development and is a member of a highly collaborative team working on CWD projects. Primary duties include the following:

1. Provide technical support for various evaluation projects related to female faculty development and student diversity in science and engineering fields;
2. Contribute to data collection and analysis as needed for annual reports and program management of the University of Washington’s Center for Institutional Change;
3. Work collaboratively with CWD staff on related projects as needed.
4. Manage assigned research tasks, which may include literature reviews, interviews, observations, and/or surveys;
5. Identification and development of appropriate survey instruments for institutional or departmental studies and evaluation projects;
6. Author or co-author research reports for dissemination in print and web-based media.

Requirements:
• Excellent research, writing and oral communication skills;
• Research experience and background in diversity and equity issues in a college or university setting;
• Experience using quantitative and qualitative research methodologies to collect and analyze data;
• Experience using computer software to perform statistical analyses and data management (i.e., Access, SPSS, Excel, and Microsoft Word);
• Experience in effectively communicating research results to a wide variety of audiences;
• Knowledge of web-based resources and web search skills;
• Currently enrolled graduate student at the University of Washington.

The position requires at least a one-year commitment, and compensation will be at the Research Assistant level (i.e., monthly stipend commensurate with graduate level, tuition remission, and health insurance).
