Join the posTComm team!!

I am writing with an invitation to join this year’s posTComm production team. postTComm is the annual department newsletter! By joining this group of students, guided by TC staff and faculty, you can add depth to your experience in writing, editing, document design, and publication project management, and create an end product that you can be proud of! If you are interested, please email Kate Long at katelong@u.washington.edu.

If you aren’t familiar with this terrific newsletter, look for copies of last year’s issue on the counter at the front desk in the main office, Loew 14. It is entirely student-produced, and makes a fantastic portfolio piece.

You can choose from a variety of roles on this project: project manager, editor, writer, layout designer/creator, photographer, and more.

There’s lots of flexibility in the roles; we usually have several student writers, for example, and some students want a chance to take on more than one role. I serve as faculty advisor. The project stretches over Winter and Spring quarters 2009, but you can sign up for only one quarter if you choose.

You can earn academic credit for your work by registering for TC495 (internship), TC499 (undergraduates, individual projects), or TC599 (graduate students, individual projects). Each of these paths has specific requirements; for example if you register for your internship, you have to fulfill all of the internship requirements. You can also choose to take part as a volunteer.

Below I quickly summarize the main points about working on the posTComm team; Kate Long (katelong@u.washington.edu) can answer your questions about credits and course requirements. If you are interested please contact Kate right away so we can schedule meeting times for winter quarter.

Roles:
 project manager
 editor(s), In The Real World editor
 layout designer(s)
 production editor(s)–to implement the design in InDesign
 photographer(s) (and producer of any other illustrations)
 writers of stories

Responsibilities:
 Work 3 hours per week for each credit hour you sign up for
 Prepare a progress report each week: your tasks, what you did
 Meet more or less weekly as a group (and in smaller groups as needed)

Thank you,

Jan
