Student Worker Position Available

UW International Educational Outreach is looking for a student Immigration and Activities Assistant. The primary unit to be served is the English Language Programs, assisting and reporting to the Student Services and Immigration Advisors. We are a busy office, serving over 600 international students per quarter. We’re looking for someone who: has an interest in working with international students; is able to work both independently and as part of a team; and is able to handle a complex and busy work environment.

Position responsibilities:
• Help plan and implement student activities and events; independently serve as contact and facilitator for events.
• Help plan and assist at orientations and other ceremonies.
• Reserve event/reception space
• Update all student contact information changes with registration office and in immigration database
• Assist with the creation and maintenance of international student immigration files.
• Maintain e-mail correspondence with students.
• General administrative support, including: making copies, files, printing file labels, filing, receptionist coverage, creating correspondence, information packets, certificates, data compilation, data entry
• Assist the Student Services and Immigration Advisors as needed

Dates: Start as soon as possible; continue at least three quarters
Hours: Must work 16 to 19.5 hours per week, spread over four or five days a week
During breaks could be 40 hours/week (full-time)
Rate: $10.00 per hour

Position qualifications and requirements:
• An outgoing personality and a strong interest in student services
• Event planning experience
• Experience studying a second language, living or studying abroad and/or interacting with international students in the U.S.
• Familiarity with MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
• Fluent English speaker
• Familiarity with fax machines, email, and copying machines in a business setting
• Able to work in a fast-paced environment, be flexible, and have a sense of humor
• Able to follow directions and clarify procedures, perform tasks with accuracy and attention to detail, and follow through on tasks assigned
• Work on occasional evenings or weekends to lead student activities
• Currently enrolled as a UW student
• Possess valid drivers license and good driving record

Internship Opportunity at Intel

The People and Practices Research (PaPR) group at Intel Research is hiring interns for spring/summer 2009. We have several new projects looking at innovative ways to use sensing, actuation, and communications technology for water conservation, sustainable agriculture, and natural resource management. We’re looking for a few talented interns to help design, prototype and evaluate provocative technology concepts. The ideal candidate will have great hardware and/or software hacking skills as well as a strong design background. Experience and/or interest in user research is a plus.

Spring 2009 – Bioengineering and Nanotechnology

Seeking a laboratory TA for Spring Quarter Senior Elective in
Nanotechnology.

ROLES: The TA will be responsible for conducting the laboratory
section, preparing labs and pre-lab handouts, and grading the lab
reports. The TA will also work closely with course instructor to
develop and revise the laboratory sections.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION: College-level organic chemistry and physics
and basic understanding of nanoparicle synthesis, theory and
applications.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: The applicant should be familiar with self-
assembly processes, gold nanoparticle synthesis and functionalization,
the principles of quantum dot synthesis and fluorescence, basic cell-
culture and microscopy techniques, and have an understanding of
electron microscopy.

Teaching Assistantships for Comparative History of Ideas Department

TC graduate students with backgrounds in Humanities should apply to TA in CHID.

The Comparative History of Ideas Department (CHID) at UW is now accepting TA applications. CHID has the funding for 12 single-quarter TA positions. The bulk of these TAs are assigned to discussion sections for large lecture classes. A few senior TAs are given the opportunity to teach stand-alone classes.

Technical Writer needed for UW Engineering Business Plan

The G3 team currently consists of one Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) and two MSE seniors. The G3 team has created a water purification system that uses sunlight to rid water of both organic and inorganic contaminants. This system is designed for use in third world countries where clean drinking water is in short supply. The team is currently adding members and has an immediate need for a technical writer. The technical writer will work with G3 team members to prepare a business plan for the UW business plan competition and a proposal for the Environmental Innovation Challenge. 2009-10 CHESTER FRITZ GRANTS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDY & EXCHANGES

For 2009-10 the Graduate School will award several grants from the Chester Fritz endowment to support the international study or research by UW graduate students in the social sciences and humanities. These grants are available to fund research and/or study periods of three months. The stipend will be equivalent to the stipend of a Predoc Teaching Associate II, currently, $1718 per month, and include paid health insurance and UW tuition. No extra money is included for airfare. At the end of the study/research period, students will provide the UW with a written summary and evaluation of their experiences.
