Position Description
A research team led by Mike Crandall and Karen Fisher of The University of Washington Information School, with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is examining the impact of free access to computers and the Internet on the well-being of individuals, families, and communities. As part of a mixed methods study, researchers are conducting case studies at four library systems around the country, including interviews with library users, library staff, peer agencies’ staff, government officials and community business members.

The Impact of Free Access project is looking for two individuals to begin work almost immediately transcribing research participant interviews. The workload will be approximately 19.5 hours per week, ending by June 5, 2009.

This position is open to all qualified University of Washington students. Undergraduate and graduate level students will be compensated at the hourly rate of $16/hr. TA for INFO 360: User-Centered Design

Start Date: 3/16/09
End Date: 6/15/09

We are seeking applicants for a TA position for the undergraduate course Informatics 360: User-Centered Design. This is an introductory course focusing on the theory and practice of user-centered design. In this course, students will examine methods for identifying users’ needs, understanding users’ behaviors, envisioning and prototyping new systems, and evaluating the usability of systems. Emphasis is placed on incorporating people in the design process from initial field observations to summative usability testing.

This position will average 20 hours per week. INFO 360 has two sections. Section A meets on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 2:00 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. with a lab on Wednesdays from 1:30 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. Section B meets on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:30 p.m. to 2:50 p.m. with a lab on Thursdays from 1:30 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. Classes run from March 30th through June 12th. The TA for this course must arrange with the instructor which class days and times will be attended on a regular basis, be available to lead the lab sections, and hold regular weekly office hours.

I am trying to reach my desired “n” of 90 study participants for my dissertation work, and need many more than I currently have. I am hoping some of you (faculty, students, professionals) may wish to participate.

Tropical Disease Natural Product Drug Discovery Assistantships in Panama

We are looking for upper-division undergraduate students or recent graduates for research assistantships in natural product drug discovery during the summer and/or fall 2009 with possible extension to spring 2010 in the labs of Drs. Marcy J. Balunas, Carmenza Spadafora, and Marcelino Gutiérrez at the Institute of Advanced Scientific Investigations and High Technology Services (INDICASAT) in conjunction with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama City, Panama. The project is part of a U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) International Cooperative Biodiversity Group (ICBG) grant entitled “Training, Conservation and Drug Discovery from Panamanian Microorganisms” (Principal Investigator, Dr. William H. Earn Credit Writing for the Web

Earn 1-2 credits in Spring 09 Writing for the Web
In Spring quarter we are looking for a motivated student to earn one or two independent study credits working with Profs. Jan Spyridakis and Mark Zachry and Publication Coordinator Kate Long to improve and update the content on the HCDE website. The focus of improvements will be on content—our rebranding exercise will commence over the summer months. The selected student will work independently, following a style guide.
