This year, an emphasis has been placed on the role of “New Media” in relation to communication, ranging from the way it informs classroom pedagogy to the way it shapes our society. UW is hosting the 2011 iConference in Seattle this coming February.  Just as an FYI, the early registration deadline ends today, afterwards the cost goes to $400 for faculty and $150 for students (currently $325 and $125).

Thiel Fellowship Announcement

On behalf of Peter Thiel and the Thiel Foundation, a non-profit devoted to promoting entrepreneurialism and innovation in science and technology, we recently announced a new fellowship called 20 under 20, in which we are giving 20 entrepreneurs under 20 years of age a $100,000 grant to not only explore their entrepreneurial ideas, but also to mentor with a wide range of companies, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, and more.

Startup Weekend Redmond

This upcoming weekend is an event called Startup Weekend Redmond. First a little background: Startup Weekend is a Seattle-based non-profit organization that promotes entrepreneurship throughout the world. They put on events where attendees share startup ideas on a Friday night, form into groups, and produce a working beta product by Sunday night. Attendees come from all backgrounds – designers, developers, and business/marketing. Locally, Startup Weekend has worked with Foster at UW and Seattle University. Tomorrow: Poster Session by HCDE Students

Join us on Wednesday, December 8, on the fourth floor of Sieg Hall!
Students in HCDE 333: Advanced Technical and Oral Communication will hold poster sessions to share and discuss their work on sustainable engineering projects.

The sessions will be from 10:30-11:30 and 12:30-2:30 in the 4th floor hallway of Sieg Hall.

Seminar Title: Educating the Well-Rounded Engineer

Abstract:
The Academic Pathways Study (APS) is part of the Center for the Advancement of Engineering Education (CAEE), an NSF-funded research center that began in 2003. Qualitative and quantitative data were gathered from multiple cohorts of undergraduate engineering students using a multi-method approach including surveys, structured and semi-structured interviews, and written design tasks.
