A lot of focus in research is directed toward screen based user interface concepts, but concepts rarely go beyond the boundaries of screens.

This talk takes a look at the traditional role of product designers in mediating technology, and explores opportunities where product design complements and influences interaction through physical artifacts.

The CPTSC Graduate Student Diversity Award

Bedford/St. Martin’s, a leading publisher of textbooks in the field of technical communication, has agreed to sponsor a scholarship for the purpose of supporting the goal of CPTSC to increase diversity in its membership and in the field of technical communication. Eligible candidates for this scholarship include graduate students whose race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, and/or nationality are underrepresented in the technical communication field. The scholarship is provided to assist the recipient with expenses associated with the CPTSC conference, up to the amount of the scholarship. Seminar Title: “Recent Value-Sensitive Findings in the Area of Human-Robot Interaction”

Human-robot interaction (HRI) is an increasingly active field with significant implications for the future of how humans interact with and relate to robotic systems. In this talk, I will review recent work in the field of HRI that speaks directly (and sometimes indirectly) to the impact of robotic design on human ethical values. I will also briefly discuss how specific research and design methodologies can assess and address these value implications in HRI.

Scholarships for Women in Computer Degree Programs

The Association of Women in Computing in Puget Sound offers two $1,000 scholarships each year.

Each year, AWC/PS offers $1000 scholarships to two women enrolled in an Information Technology program in a Puget Sound area college. Please pass this on to your students to apply for this scholarship.
