Abstract
A vast majority of postsecondary institutions support and augment classroom instruction using a Learning Management System (LMS)—current figures estimate that over 95% of colleges and universities in the United States deploy an LMS on their campus. Given the penetration of LMSs throughout higher education and the depth of use on most campuses, these systems offer a ready source of data that can be analyzed to facilitate academic decisions for a growing number of students. I will describe a project in which we use an application of academic analytics to enhance an existing academic mentoring program, called “the M-STEM Academy,” aimed at improving student success and retention in STEM fields. The focus of the intervention described in this talk is to leverage data collected by a LMS to develop a series of data visualizations and “early warning” prediction models that can be used by students, instructors, and academic administrators to provide near real-time information on students’ academic progress. This project builds upon prior LMS research and the success of the M-STEM Academy to further improve engineering education by providing rich and actionable views of student performance in conjunction with effective support strategies. The overall findings will guide future interventions that combine large data sources, technological warning systems, and purposeful academic support throughout the STEM disciplines and beyond.
About the Speaker
Stephanie D. Teasley is a Research Professor and Director of the Doctoral Program in the School of Information at the University of Michigan. She received her Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh and her B.A. from Kalamazoo College. Her research focuses on the use of IT to support collaborative learning in formal and informal contexts. Currently Dr. Teasley is the PI on several NSF-supported projects, including a Virtual Organizations as Socio-Technical Systems (VOSS) grant and a CreativeIT grant. She is also the Director of the USE Lab at UM, whose mission is to investigate how instructional technologies and digital media are used to innovate teaching, learning, and collaboration. During the Fall 2011 term, Dr. Teasley is a visiting faculty member in the Department of Human Centered Design and Engineering at the University of Washington.
About the event
The Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) is a ten week summer research opportunity for undergraduate Sophomores, Juniors & Seniors, and Graduate students, under the guidance of a mentor, at a participating Navy Laboratory. The stipend amounts for the program are $5,250.00 for Sophomores, $7,880.00 for Junior and Senior undergraduate students and $10,500.00 for graduate students. U.S. citizenship required; Permanent residents accepted at certain labs.
NSF’s East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students (EAPSI) are seeking applications from interested students to conduct research at host laboratories in Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, or Taiwan. An estimated 200 awards will be made for institutes lasting 8-10 weeks. Awardees receive a $5,000 stipend and airfare, while living expenses are provided by foreign co-sponsoring organizations. According to the notice, “applicants must be enrolled in a research-oriented master’s or PhD program and be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents by the application deadline date” of November 9, 2011.
