Research Assistantship Interactive Technology for Advancing Instruction in Engineering Start Date: March 16, 2010 Application Deadline: February 17, 2010 Notification by: February 28, 2010 This Research Assistantship supports the development of an interactive, dynamic, and evolving web-based tool for engineering instructors and students to use on a class-by-class basis to identify instruction strategies (from a target list of five contemporary social instruction techniques) that are work best for student learning & experience in a particular classroom.This multiple-quarter RA supports the preliminary data analysis required to identify the specifications for this tool and the programming, video editing, graphics, and related skills needed to bring a polished, professional tool onto the web for general dissemination and use by both engineering students and engineering faculty. The tool uses both verbal description of classroom scenarios and visual (video-based) examples of social instruction to assess the comfort level of faculty to teaching in new ways and of students in accepting alternative forms of instruction.

CWD concentrates on the science & engineering emerging workforce: recruitment, retention, and advancement of women and underrepresented minorities. CWD designs research projects and implements strategies to promote underrepresented workers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). Potential two-term RA position in Statistics

Peter Guttorp, faculty in the Department of Statistics is working on a collaborative proposal on Multivariate nonstationary spatial extremes in climate and atmospheric science with researchers at NC State, Ohio State and the National Center for Atmospheric Research.

One aspect of the proposal is to explain to the general public (probably through lecures, web pages and maybe magazine articles) some of the research they are doing, particularly looking for trends in extreme weather events.

Peter is interested in potentially hiring an HCDE graduate student for a potential two quarter RA-ship. The RA would participating in a research group and design the public communication aspect of the work. There should be a fair bit of scope for independent creativity for the participant.

The Graduate School solicits applications for a part-time, 50% FTE one quarter Research Assistantship (RA) appointment (with possibility of re-appointment for additional quarters) to help analyze information and data related to UW graduate education.

Responsibilities will include:
1. Research, analyze and report on graduate education data. This will require using Graduate School databases, the UW Enterprise Data Warehouse, and other institutional, web and library sources. This will also require collaboration with Graduate School staff.
2. Create reports that communicate data and analysis to the UW and larger communities.
3. Provide data analysis and information for use with internal and external constituencies via updates, published reports, and the Graduate School website.
4. Create short surveys to obtain information to supplement existing Graduate School data (e.g., short surveys of staff working in graduate education, graduate students, faculty, etc.)
5. Build local reporting systems to provide access to information that will support internal decision-making and strategic planning and communications.

LST is seeking a UW graduate student to serve as a Graduate Staff Assistant for winter and spring quarters. The Graduate Staff Assistant will be responsible for technical writing and editing. Projects include writing LST marketing materials and news stories; collaborating on technology research reports; creating and updating content for the LST Web site (http://www.uw.edu/lst), including online how-to guides, computing workshop curriculum, and profiles of technology use; collaborating with professional, graduate, and undergraduate staff on curriculum development and technical communication projects; and other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
Currently registered UW Graduate Student in good standing and eligibility to hold a Graduate Student Assistantship.

Candidates should have a genuine interest in academic technology and enjoy working with and assisting people. Candidates must have excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as strong editing skills. In addition, candidates must be able to understand new technology quickly, work well as a member of a team and independently, communicate effectively with colleagues, exercise good judgment, and meet deadlines.
