CodeDay is a 24 hour hackathon aimed towards students and hosted by local nonprofit StudentRND. CodeDay is aimed at students and it is focused on helping students learn new technologies and showing off their coding skills.

Students: Do you have a world-changing idea?
The Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition (GSEC) is a social venture plan competition open to enrolled university students in any discipline around the world. Applicants submit an executive summary of a business idea that both addresses an issue related to global poverty and will be implemented in the developing world. The deadline for this year’s competition is Tuesday November 12, 2013 at midnight Pacific Time. Semi-finalist teams (about 15-20) will be notified in early December, and will be invited to compete at the week-long competition held at the University of Washington in Seattle February 24-28, 2014, where they will receive coaching, network with hundreds of local health, development and business professionals, attend an event with the Seattle Rotary, and finally, compete for cash and in-kind prizes, including a grand prize of $12,500, a $10,000 Global Health prize, a $10,000 ICT prize, and other prizes from the Rotary and NCIIA, detailed along with their criteria here. Many organizations have only a modest understanding of user experience. Some have none at all. In such an environment, if you are the key person or team driving for a more user-centered way of working, you are a user experience team of one. (That’s true whether it’s your official job or not.)
This workshop is a hands-on crash course in the skills, methods, and clever hacks that successful UX teams of one use to work inclusively, efficiently, and effectively. It is also a frank and candid guide to the challenges and opportunities that you might encounter if you’re a UX team of one.
In this workshop, you’ll learn:

About Leah Buley
Leah Buley is a design strategist at Intuit and the author of the forthcoming book “The User Experience Team of One”. Prior to Intuit, Leah was a lead experience designer at Adaptive Path working for clients in financial services, media, consumer products, and the non-profit world. Leah writes and speaks regularly on tactics for inviting colleagues and skeptics into the user-centered design process. Her workshops and presentations have a reputation for being quirky, information-packed, and always fun.

Rhapsody has encountered different standards and constraints across mobile phones, tablets, PCs, Web, TVs, xBox and consumer electronics devices running Android, iOS, Windows, and other proprietary operating systems. Learn how we adapted and innovated to move towards a unified music service that compliments the needs and strengths of different contexts of use.
About the Speaker
Carol A. Taylor is the Director of User Research and Experience at Rhapsody International, a streaming music service. Prior to Rhapsody, she worked at Motricity (mobile data services) and T-Mobile USA and was a partner in both Magi Group Interactive and Sakson & Taylor. She has been researching and designing user experiences for mobile, Web, and PC applications for the past 15 years and is currently focused on cross-platform experience design for mobile, PC, and consumer electronics devices.

Abstract The ubiquity of mobile devices has fundamentally shifted the landscape of personal computing. However, there is a tension between the ever-growing computing power of these devices and the limited capability they offer for interaction. In this talk, I will focus on three important aspects of mobile interaction research: applications, design fundamentals and tool support. I will give examples of interactive systems that can leverage unique capabilities and interaction context of mobile devices, discuss our efforts in discovering and distilling fundamentals for designing mobile interaction, and demonstrate new methods and tools for creating advanced mobile interaction behaviors.
About the Speaker
Yang Li is a Senior Research Scientist at Google, and an affiliate faculty member in Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington. He earned a PhD degree in Computer Science from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and then conducted postdoctoral research in EECS at the University of California at Berkeley. Yang is broadly interested in Human-Computer Interaction, especially mobile computing, interaction design tools and gesture-based interaction. His work (Gesture Search and Library) has been used by millions of users.
