Abstract: Students of computer and information sciences aren’t the only ones who need to understand how web resources are represented, named, provided, composed, and exchanged. Everyone can learn a set of basic principles and then apply them to be more effective participants in (and co-creators of) the web. Microsoft’s Jon Udell is teaching communities how to manage their public calendars in a way that enables groups and organization to be authoritative for their own calendar data, and to connect their calendars in syndication networks using the well-established (but underutilized) Internet standard for calendar exchange. In this talk he’ll review the progress he’s made so far helping cities and towns around the country adopt this model, discuss the web concepts required, and explore the challenges involved in conveying those concepts. He’ll also suggest how lessons learned from community calendar syndication can generalize to other domains, including health care, energy conservation, and political discourse.

About Jon Udell
Jon Udell is an author, information architect, software developer, and new media innovator. His 1999 book, Practical Internet Groupware, helped lay the foundation for what we now call social software. Udell was formerly a software developer at Lotus, BYTE Magazine’s executive editor and Web maven, and an independent consultant. A hands-on thinker, Udell’s analysis of industry trends has always been informed by his own ongoing experiments with software, information architecture, and new media. From 2002 to 2006 he was InfoWorld’s lead analyst, author of the weekly Strategic Developer column, and blogger-in-chief. During his InfoWorld tenure he also pioneered the medium now known as screencasting and produced an audio show, Interviews with Innovators. In 2007 Udell joined Microsoft as a writer, interviewer, speaker, and experimental software developer. Currently he is building and explaining a calendar network that’s based on open standards and runs in the Windows Azure cloud.

• Demonstrated strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office, Creative Suite (primarily InDesign, PhotoShop, Illustrator) and MAC computers.

• Ability to work outside of regularly scheduled work hours on event days (evenings and weekends).

• Ability to lift 25-30 lbs.

Announcing the 10th^th annual

Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition (GSEC)

 Students: Do you have a world-changing idea?

The Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition (GSEC) is a social venture plan competition open to enrolled university students in any discipline around the world. Applicants submit an executive summary of a business idea that both addresses an issue related to global poverty and will be implemented in the developing world.

The deadline for this year’s competition is Tuesday November 12, 2013 at midnight Pacific Time. Semi-finalist teams (about 15-20) will be notified in early December, and will be invited to compete at the week-long competition held at the University of Washington in Seattle February 24-28, 2014, where they will receive coaching, network with hundreds of local health, development and business professionals, attend an event with the Seattle Rotary, and finally, compete for cash and in-kind prizes, including a grand prize of $12,500, a $10,000 Global Health prize, a $10,000 ICT prize, and other prizes from the Rotary and NCIIA, detailed along with their criteria here.

This workshop is a hands-on crash course in the skills, methods, and clever hacks that successful UX teams of one use to work inclusively, efficiently, and effectively. It is also a frank and candid guide to the challenges and opportunities that you might encounter if you’re a UX team of one.

In this workshop, you’ll learn:

• Quick and effective methods for every point in the UX process, from planning a project to collaborative lo-fi design and rapid prototyping
• Language and tools for “selling” UX and building support
• Soft skills for gaining buy-in, conquering conflict, and communicating your work

Like any good bootcamp, this workshop will get you working, sweating, and challenging your own assumptions about what you’re capable of.

About Leah Buley

Leah Buley is a design strategist at Intuit and the author of the forthcoming book “The User Experience Team of One”. Prior to Intuit, Leah was a lead experience designer at Adaptive Path working for clients in financial services, media, consumer products, and the non-profit world. Leah writes and speaks regularly on tactics for inviting colleagues and skeptics into the user-centered design process. About the Speaker
Carol A. Taylor is the Director of User Research and Experience at Rhapsody International, a streaming music service. Prior to Rhapsody, she worked at Motricity (mobile data services) and T-Mobile USA and was a partner in both Magi Group Interactive and Sakson & Taylor. She has been researching and designing user experiences for mobile, Web, and PC applications for the past 15 years and is currently focused on cross-platform experience design for mobile, PC, and consumer electronics devices.
