New blog on redesign of UW website

uw-webhttp://depts.washington.edu/uweb/blog/

UW Marketing has started a new blog that catalogs our progress toward a fully redesigned Web site, including a look back at past home page designs dating from 1996.

The Marketing Web team was formed in 2008 with a goal of helping to maximize the effectiveness of the Web throughout the UW community by fostering better coordination and improved navigation, architecture, design and strategy.

The team manages the UW home page and other top-level pages and sites. We created the UW Alert banner and interactive campus map, and made the design for the UW’s new iPhone app. Next up? A Web redesign. Watch for details on this blog!

HCDE blog redesign

After a successful reader survey on the design and usability of the HCDE blog, we have implemented a few changes.

  • Default, simple design replaces custom box design
  • Categories now grouped by parent and child labels to better address audience type

Future changes include:

  • Guest posts by alumni and current students
  • More cross linking between HCDE home site and the blog

I will be contacting readers who have won HCDE prizes for participating in the survey.

Thanks for reading!

Reminder: HCDE blog usability survey

If you haven’t already done so, please take a few minutes to fill out a survey on the usability of the HCDE blog.

The blog has been created as a tool for HCDE student services staff to communicate with students and alumni. As usability researchers and students, I would appreciate your input on the blog’s design (screenshots included!), categories, and purpose.

HCDE Jobs/Internships Database back in action!

HCDE jobs database

HCDE jobs database

The HCDE jobs database is once again the sole spot for searching for jobs and internships. The jobs that are posted here are vetted to ensure that HCDE students and alumni are qualified for these positions.

The blog will no longer post jobs and internships, with the exception of Work-Study and TA/RA/GSA positions.

If you have any questions about the jobs database please email hcdeweb@u.washington.edu.

UI Trends: A new blog

http://uitrends.com/

http://uitrends.com/

UI Trends (uitrends.com) is intended to be

  • a dynamic light-weight repository for interesting user interface designs and trends for website and web applications
  • a place to comment on and discuss user interface designs and trends
  • a source of inspiration for designers and developers

There are several great user interface patterns websites, such as Welie.com and UI Patterns.  UI Trends differentiates itself as stated above: by focusing on discussion and being dynamic and light-weight.  UI Trends will not categorize designs/trends in a formal manner, but rather present designs in a critical context and leverage discussion and opinion to deliver value.

UI Trends hopes to recruit contributors who are interested in posting designs on a regular basis.  If you are interested in being a formal contributor, please contact us here.  You may also contribute designs through our submission link here (does not require registration).
