TPED (Targeted Provider Education Demonstration) Project was a three-year series of HIV/AIDS trainings for non-clinical health and human service providers in Alaska. Cascade Health Communication Group (then called MedEd Media) developed a video in each of the project's three years, as well as an audio CD and promotional materials.

Videos we developed:

Let's Face It: HIV/AIDS and Alaska Natives
Shot in Alaska, this 30-minute video uses Alaska Native/American Indian voices to share the basic facts about HIV. Three HIV-positive Natives share their stories of struggling with the virus and with the medications, while a community educator presents the facts about HIV transmission and treatment, and explores Alaska-specific issues. (2000)

The Community Cares: Assessing Alaska Natives for HIV Risk
Intended for community health and social service providers who work with Alaska Native populations, this video provides guidelines for determining a client's risk for HIV, and models providing basic HIV test referral and risk reduction counseling. A historical section explores the multi-generational traumas that are the root cause of risk for some Alaska Natives, and details some of the Alaska specific challenges and barriers to doing HIV prevention and treatment. (2001)

Listen and Guide: Delivering Mental Health Care in HIV-Affected Alaskan Villages
Alaska Natives have already survived several catastrophic epidemics, which have enduring mental health ramifications even now, generations later. This video travels with itinerant mental health providers who discuss treatment strategies sensitive to historical trauma, stigma, cultural taboo, isolation, and the co-morbidity of HIV with substance abuse and mental illness. (2002)

"In my opinion, the video "Let's Face It: HIV and Alaska Natives" was by far the most effective strategy employed by our project to dispel the myths and misconceptions about HIV-infection in Alaska Native communities."
Bernadette Lalonde, Ph.D. Principal Investigator, Alaska TPED Project,
Research Associate Professor, University of Washington.
