Hellenic Studies Program : Certificate of Attainment in Modern Greek


Beginning in 2009, the University of Washington has been re-installed as an official examination center for the Certificate of Attainment in Modern Greek, conducted by the Greek Language Center, a branch of the Ministry of Education of the Hellenic Republic. The Certificate of Attainment in Modern Greek is the only officially recognized diploma in Modern Greek proficiency, and it is accepted as evidence of knowledge of Modern Greek for employment and other purposes by the Greek state, the European Union and other organizations.

The Hellenic Studies program is responsible for conducting the examination at the University of Washington.

Prospective applicants should fill out the following forms (application form, questionnaire), and a xerox copy of a state-issued ID (driver’s license, passport) and send them to:

The application fees are 95 USD (=65 euros) for levels A and B and 110 USD (=75 euros) for levels C and D. Applicants should make their checks payable to “Hellenic Studies” with a note “Greek proficiency exam fee”. The checks should be submitted along with the other application materials.

Complete application packages should be received by noon on MARCH 16, 2009.

The examinations will take place at the University of Washington, Seattle campus (exact location will be announced to the applicants in due time) on Wednesday May 13 (levels A and B) and Thursday May 14 (levels C and D).

The Hellenic Studies program will assist, by writing letters of support, middle and high school students who attempt to gain language credit after obtaining the Certificate for Attainment in Modern Greek.
