Hellenic Studies Program :: Program Requirements


The Hellenic Studies Program at the University of Washington was created by an endowment established in 1998 by the University in cooperation with the local Greek-American community. [See History of the Program] Students wishing to focus their studies on the Greek track fulfill the requirements of the European Studies degree but also have specific courses with Greek content. The following chart will indicate the relationship as well as the special courses in Hellenic Studies.

HELLENIC STUDIES: AN EMPHASIS WITHIN THE EUROPEAN STUDIES MAJOR

LANGUAGE
  • Two years basic language study
    • Passing of competency exam
    • Credits do not count toward major
  • Ten credits of approved coursework
    • at 300- or 400-level in foreign language
    • or involving extensive foreign language use.
  • EURO 111-2-3, 211-2-3 Modern Greek
    • Passing of competency exam
    • Credits do not count toward major
  • 300- or 400-level work
CORE SEQUENCE
  • EURO 301 (5): A team-taught course on a range of topics important for the understanding of Europe in its present situation.
  • Modern Europe (5): A survey course dealing with (primarily) Modern Europe, e.g. HIST 113.
  • SISĀ 201 (5): A survey course providing a historical understanding of the twentieth century and major global issues today.

    • Particularly appropriate is HIST/EURO 364 (Greece from 1821-Present)

ELECTIVES
Electives (10-15 cr): Most of these courses will be modern in focus but students are required to take at least one course dealing with the pre-modern period. Electives (10-15 cr): Particularly appropriate are HIST/EURO 320 (4), "Greek History 7000 BCE - Present," and HSTAM 315 (5), "Byzantine Empire."
