Five to twenty percent of people with chronic hepatitis C infection go on to develop a scarring condition of the liver called cirrhosis over a period of 20 to 30 years, and 1 to 5% will die from liver failure or liver cancer. Not all people develop these complications. Successful treatment can eliminate hepatitis C virus from the body and lower the likelihood that long-term complications from hepatitis C infection will occur.
