Natural History of HSV in HIV-Infected Persons

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) on herpes and how the immune system responds to herpes in HIV-positive individuals.

Study Visits and Procedures: Participants are screened for herpes and HIV at the first visit. Eligible volunteers will be asked to come to the clinic for a total of 24 visits over a period of 3 years. Every four months participants will have a blood draw, a skin biopsy will be performed at the enrollment visit, and biopsies will be performed on any herpes lesions that develop during the study period. Additionally, participants will be asked to complete daily home swabbing for a 60-day period at 3 different times during the study.

  • HIV+ men and women with genital herpes
  • HIV and HSV antibody tests
  • CD4 count
