Immunologic and Virologic Characterization of First Episode Genital HSV-1 Infection

Study Description:
The purpose of this study is to understand the natural history of genital HSV‐1 in persons who recently acquired genital HSV‐1. Participants will perform 30‐day genital and oral swabbing sessions at 2 months and 11 months after initial diagnosis with genital HSV‐1. Participants may be offered enrollment into a sub‐study, in which they will undergo frequent blood draws, cervical sampling and genital biopsies at the site of HSV‐1 lesions. Sexual partners who have been the monogamous partner of the participants with primary genital HSV‐1 may be offered enrollment into a 30‐day genital and oral swabbing study.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Diagnosed with genital HSV‐1 in the last 2 months
  • In good health

 

Exclusions (conditions which would prevent a volunteer from participating in this study):

  • HIV positive
  • Women only: pregnant or planning to become pregnant during the study

Compensation:
Participants will receive $25 for the Screening Visit and $50 for each follow‐up visits for a total of up to $375. Women will receive an additional $25 for visits in which cervical samples are collected for a total of up to $550. Participants who enroll in the optional sub‐study will receive an additional $275. Women will receive an additional $25 for visits in which cervical samples are collected for a total of up to $375.
