We implement a collaborative model of care and work in cooperation with and coordination of mental health care with medical care.  We also make sure to provide education and communication to our clients regarding their diagnoses, treatment, preventions and use of the health care system and make referrals when appropriate to other campus or community resources.

Who is eligible to receive our services?

Anyone in the UW community is eligible to receive mental health and counseling services from our clinic. The convenient campus location, the competitive fees, the evening hours, and the high caliber of our staff make our clinic a desirable option. At the same time, our clinic is not the best resource for all problems and situations. We provide services in keeping with our goals, and within the business hours, structure and staffing of our clinic.

We do not provide services for those needing:

  • substance-abuse treatment,
  • day treatment,
  • the availability of 24-hour back-up, or
  • for those whose treatment has been mandated by the legal system or an employer.

Other situations that do not fit our scope of practice are:

  • Individuals with eating disorders whose weight is below 75% of their ideal body mass index, or meet the criteria for an inpatient program;
  • Individuals with serious patterns of self-harming or violent behavior;
  • Individuals with symptoms that are too severe to treat in an out-patient setting (for example, acute mania or other psychotic episodes);
  • Individuals who are non-compliant with treatment recommendations or payment plans (for example, someone refusing medications and yet wishes to be seen by a medical provider or someone sets up a payment plan and then defaults on the payment)

In these instances we will make appropriate referrals.
