Mental Health: Services

Scope of Care

The Mental Health Clinic at Hall Health utilizes an effective brief treatment approach when seeing patients in psychotherapy.  Duration of psychotherapy is generally six to ten sessions with the goal of rapid stabilization. Essentially, our goal for patients is to assist them in returning to the level of functioning required for them to successfully carry out their academic or other work.  Exceptions to a brief treatment approach may be made on a case-by-case basis.  Brief therapy limits are not applicable to our psychiatric services where patients may be seen for medication evaluation and follow up appointments on an indefinite basis.  Group therapy is also an exception to a brief treatment approach.

We provide a variety of high-quality mental health services to the students, faculty, staff, and alumni of the University of Washington. Services include:

  • individual and couples counseling and therapy,
  • crisis counseling and intervention,
  • group therapy and support groups,
  • medication evaluation and management,
  • psychiatric services,

Who is eligible to receive our services?

Anyone in the UW community is eligible to receive services from our clinic. The convenient campus location, the competitive fees, the evening hours, and the high caliber of our staff make our clinic a desirable option.

Exclusions

Our clinic is not the best resource for all problems and situations.  We provide services in keeping with our goals, and within the business hours, structure and staffing of our clinic.

We do not provide services for:

  • those needing solely substance abuse treatments,
  • day treatment,
  • the availability of 24 hour back-up, or
  • for those whose treatment has been mandated by the legal system or an employer.

Other situations that do not fit our scope of practice are:

  • Individuals with eating disorders whose weight is below 75% of their ideal body mass index, or meet the criteria for an inpatient program;
  • Individuals with serious patterns of self-harming or violent behavior;
  • Individuals with symptoms that are too severe to treat in an out-patient setting (for example, acute mania or other psychotic episodes);
  • Individuals who are non-compliant with treatment recommendations or payment plans (for example, someone refusing medications and yet wishes to be seen by a medical provider or someone sets up a payment plan and then defaults on the payment)

In these instances we will make appropriate referrals.
