How to Apply

Admission to the HIHIM major is competitive. The program only admits once a year. The application period begins in Janurary and ends on:

Certificate Applicants: April 15th
Degree Applicants: April 15th

Begin with the "Application Process" documents to receive the appropriate advising for applying to HIHIM.

The application for the bachelors degree is different from the application for the post-baccalareate degree. You must have a bachelors degree by June 21 in order to apply for the certificate student status.

Evidence of English Language Proficiency

HIHIM English proficiency requirements differ from the UW's general English proficiency requirements. HIHIM applicants must submit one of the following as evidence of English language proficiency. An applicant who does not have evidence of language proficiency is NOT eligible to apply to the HIHIM Program.

Acceptable forms of Evidence of English Language Proficiency:

  • Official transcript of earned bachelor's degree from an institution of higher education in the United States
  • Successful completion of the UW Intensive English Program prior to admission to the University of Washington.
  • Minimum test scores as listed below. Test scores may not be more than 2 years old. Applicants with test scores older than 2 years should contact the HIHIM program.

490*SAT: Critical Reading (SAT CR) score and Writing (SAT W) score
21*ACT: English/Writing (ACT E/W) score and Reading (ACT R) score
7.0*IELTS (no sub-score below 6.0)
92*TOEFL iBT (no sub-score below 20)

Additional Information

A nationwide criminal background search is mandatory for all accepted applicants. Names of accepted students will be submitted for a background check.


All applicants accepted to the HIHIM major are considered Health Science majors at University of Washington. All Health Science majors are required to show documentation of protection against a number of vaccine-preventable diseases. This must be completed by the end of the first quarter of HIHIM study.
