Cross-Country Jumping

By Kaitlyn Age 13

I am involved in a special type of horseback riding called eventing. It is a bit like the triathalon of horse riding. One of the three stages in eventing, called cross-couuntry, involves jumping natural obstacles, such as log piles, water obstacles, and ditches.  These jumps are out in an open field or in a wooded area. During cross-country you are out in nature, with your horse as your only companion. Although you are galloping along at a VERY fast pace, adrenaline pumping like mad, it is oddly peaceful at the same time. There is nothing like the feeling of freedom that you get from soaring across the terrain with a strong, fast, horse beneath you. Words cannot adequately describe it. At that moment you feel a oneness with the horse and surrounding nature that is impossible to attain in any other way.
