The vulnerability to injury of pedestrians, both children and older adults, has been a significant area of interest to HIPRC investigators, as well as an opportunity for investigators and staff to work with agencies involved in improving pedestrian safety. In 2003, the HIPRC joined with the City of Seattle and other organizations in promoting Pedestrian Summer, a campaign to encourage mutual respect by motorists and pedestrians and greater awareness of safety issues. Studies have focused on injuries to older pedestrians using crosswalks, the prevention of pedestrian injuries to children, and law enforcement, pedestrian safety, and driver compliance with crosswalk laws.
