Vehicle Safety Research
Crash Injury Research & Engineering Network
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 4 and 34. The Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center participates as a site in the Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network (CIREN) sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the automotive industry. Researchers at each CIREN site share data and expertise to lead to a better understanding of crash-injury mechanisms and the design of safer vehicles. CIREN is a multi-center research program involving a collaboration of clinicians and engineers in academia, industry, and government. Together, they pursue in-depth studies of crashes, injuries, and treatments to improve processes and outcomes. CIREN's mission is to improve the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of motor vehicle crash injuries to reduce deaths, disabilities, and human and economic costs.
