Following the model of injury control pioneered by Dr. Barbara Barlow at Harlem Hospital 20 years ago, this project is part of a network of hospital-based injury prevention programs in 25 cities nationwide. The model uses local data to identify pressing local injury problems. Community coalitions are brought together to address an issue, using proven prevention strategies and local resources. Evaluation is a crucial component demonstrate the community benefit of the program. Investigators hope to identify causes of geographic disparity in childhood injuries and to work with community groups to target and eliminate excess injury risk.
