HIPRC Hosts Pedestrian Safety Conference Jan. 16th

In tribute to Tatsuo Nakata, chief of staff for Seattle City Councilman David Della who was killed in a West Seattle crosswalk last November, HIPRC will host a pedestrian safety conference to identify immediate actions for improving pedestrian safety in Seattle Tuesday, January 16th, from 9 am - 3:30 pm in the Research and Training Building Auditorium of Harborview Medical Center.

Harborview pediatrician Dr. Abe Bergman will chair the conference. Drs. Fred Rivara, Tom Koepsell, and Brian Johnston of HIPRC also will address pedestrian safety issues.

"Our focus is to examine lessons learned from scientific research on pedestrian safety measures that are proven effective," said Dr. Bergman. "We hope to come to consensus on some traffic engineering measures that will have immediate impact on pedestrian safety."

The conference will also feature representatives from Seattle Department of Transportation, Seattle Police Department, Seattle/King County Health Department, Headstrong, Feet First, the Washington State Traffic Safety Commission, and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Those interested in attending the January 16th conference should contact Suzette Riley at HIPRC at suzriley@u.washington edu or (206) 744-9452.
