OUTREACH
At the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center, our mission is to reduce the impact of injury and violence on people’s lives. To do this, we must ensure that our research translates into practical programs that create safer communities. This is best accomplished by nurturing collaborations with community partners and organizations towards a common goal.
Center faculty are engaged in outreach activities both in the United States and abroad. From research designed to evaluate the effectiveness of parent education programs to prevent child abuse, to increasing community awareness about the correct use of booster seats for toddlers, to designing safer roadways for pedestrian traffic in Ghana, our investigators are tackling some of society’s most difficult injury issues and problems.
Finding out "what works" in injury control is essential. Systematic review can clarify which programs are appropriate to implement on a broader scale, and which programs may be of greatest benefit to public health. CDC Lauds Booster Seat Research
Earlier this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a web news story showcasing the successful efforts of Injury Center Director Beth Ebel, M.D., and colleagues to increase community awareness of the importance of seating young children in booster seats. According to the story, “Dr. Ebel and center faculty are helping people recognize that booster seats prevent severe injuries and even death.”
