Widespread speeding in Ghana creates dangerous road conditions for drivers and pedestrians. Fogarty Scholar’s Research Leads to Improved Traffic Control Measures in GhanaIn 2006, the Injury Center sponsored Fogarty scholar James Damsere-Derry, who carried out a research project measuring vehicle speeds in several locations along the Accra-Kumasi road in Ghana. His study showed extremely low compliance with the posted speed limit in congested areas where many pedestrian injuries and deaths occurred. It also revealed that the mean speed was about twice the posted speed limit and that 95% of vehicles exceeded the limit. When Damsere-Derry published his findings, the results captured attention of Ghanian media and policy makers. Improved traffic control measures are now underway, creating a future of safer roadways for pedestrians and drivers in Ghana.
