EDUCATION & TRAINING

The Center's education and training program fosters the ongoing development of new and experienced investigators in the field of injury control. Individuals can learn essential research and evaluation skills, or strengthen their experience by working with seasoned mentors. The program emphasizes utilizing sound scientific methods that bridge the practice and research communities.

Drawing upon the expertise of our physicians, scientists and technical staff, the Center offers opportunities that cross disciplines and support collaboration. The following activities are conducted by faculty and staff:

Widespread speeding in Ghana creates dangerous road conditions for drivers and pedestrians.

Fogarty Scholar’s Research Leads to Improved Traffic Control Measures in Ghana

In 2006, the Injury Center sponsored Fogarty scholar James Damsere-Derry, who carried out a research project measuring vehicle speeds in several locations along the Accra-Kumasi road in Ghana. His study showed extremely low compliance with the posted speed limit in congested areas where many pedestrian injuries and deaths occurred. It also revealed that the mean speed was about twice the posted speed limit and that 95% of vehicles exceeded the limit.

When Damsere-Derry published his findings, the results captured attention of Ghanian media and policy makers. Improved traffic control measures are now underway, creating a future of safer roadways for pedestrians and drivers in Ghana.
