MA Degree

The Master of Arts degree is normally the student's first professional degree in History. Unless the student possesses a Master's Degree in History at the time of admission, the student will automatically be admitted to the MA program. Because work at this stage will usually constitute the student's introduction to the profession, and the Department's introduction to the student, the course work and review procedures undertaken at this stage are of special importance.

Masters students may choose to complete a two-field MA in which students select two fields from a single division, or a cross-divisional MA in which student select two fields but from two different divisions.

Upon successful completion of the MA degree, students are eligible to apply for promotion to the department's PhD program.
