    Graduate Placement

With twelve individuals finishing their Ph.D.s in 2003–2004, History had a productive year in graduate education. Success was capped by the tenure-track placement of several of the year’s History Ph.D.s. Two 2003-2004 Ph.D.s remained in non-teaching positions: Melvin Thatcher (China) continues as Archivist for the Genealogical Society of Utah, and Thomas Dykstra (medieval Russia) is a computer systems analyst. Placement in 2004-2005 continued the record of success.

Several Ph.D.s from earlier years also accepted permanent positions in the last couple of years: Coll Thrush (North American West, 2002) at the University of British Columbia; Scott Rausch (U.S., 2000) at Lower Columbia College; Tuska Benes (Germany, 2001) at William and Mary College; Mike Halvorson (early modern Europe, 2001) at Pacific Lutheran University; and Connie Chiang (Environmental history, 2002) at Bowdoin College. Additionally, several History Ph.D.s from earlier years accepted high-profile academic positions: Brown University hired Robert Self (U.S., 1998) away from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Steven Miles (China, 2000) moved from Southern Illinois University to Washington University in St. Louis; and Joseph Taylor (U.S., 1996) left Iowa State University to accept a Canada Research Chair at Simon Fraser University. Shawn Ross (ancient Greece, 2001) left William Paterson University to accept a position at the University of New South Wales, and Ellen Cong Zhang (China, 2003) went from the College of St. Rose to the University of Virginia.

Over the years, many Ph.D.s from the Department have taken temporary appointments (some in History or International Studies at the UW) in order to gain experience. Consequently, the History Department has had recent Ph.D.s teaching at Southern Connecticut State College, the University of the Pacific, North Seattle Community College, Wagner College, Guilford College and the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
