In addition to the official UW Commencement ceremony held in Husky Stadium,
the History Department holds its own Convocation ceremony. Students are
encouraged to attend one or both of these ceremonies. Students generally
find that the History Department's ceremony is more personal that the
official ceremony; your name will be read at our ceremony, and History
department faculty will be in attendance.
The History Department Convocation Ceremony is usually held on the Friday
before UW Commencement. In 2007, this will be June 8. There will be a
reception immediately following the ceremony. Please note that all information
about Convocation is tentative.
Please note: Participation in the History Department Convocation is by
invitation only and requires that you RSVP to us directly. Even if you
have already visited the UW's Commencement website, you must still RSVP
to our event as directed on the invitation.
Guest Tickets
Tickets are not required for guests attending the History Department Convocation.
When you RSVP you will be asked to indicate the number of guests attending
the event. There is no limit on the number of guests you may bring.
Attire
Graduates should wear "business casual" attire. Caps and gowns
are not worn at this ceremony.
Reception
There will be an outdoor reception immediately following the Convocation.
You and your guests are invited to join us for light refreshments, compliments
of the Department.
Registration & Late Seating
The ceremony will begin promptly at 1:00 pm. All graduates must be present
and seated by 12:45. Graduates arriving after this time will be seated
on a space available basis. Guests arriving after 12:55 may be asked to
sit in the balcony.
Parking
If you or your guests wish to park on the UW campus during Convocation,
you need to purchase a parking permit in advance through the Commencement
web site when it comes on-line in May.
6 Things You Need to Know about Commencement and Convocation:
- The University-wide Commencement ceremony is held in Husky Stadium
on the Saturday following Spring quarter finals week. Formal academic
regalia (cap and gown) is worn at this event.
- The History Department Convocation ceremony is held on the Friday
preceding Commencement, the last day of Spring quarter finals week.
Business casual attire is worn at this event. An informal reception
with light food and drink follows the ceremony.
- You may participate in one or both ceremonies. Participation is not
required for graduation. Conversely, participation in either of these
ceremonies does not guarantee graduation.
- Students who complete their degrees in December, March, June, or who
have a dissertation defense officially scheduled with the Graduate School
before the 1st of June may participate in the History Department Convocation
ceremony.
- Your diploma will be mailed to your permanent address (as it is listed
in MyUW) approximately four months after you graduate.
- You will receive additional information and an invitation to the Department
Convocation in the middle of Spring quarter.
