Uta Poiger: Areas of Graduate Study

Division: Europe Since 1789

Students may pursue a field encompassing the society, politics, and culture of 19th- and 20th-century Germany. Students develop 6-8 subfields in consultation with the professor that cover major historiographical questions and relate to their areas of interest (i.e., the German bourgeoisie; the radical right in Imperial Germany; women in Nazi Germany; Weimar culture; gender and the Cold War).

Division: Comparative History (Historiography & Comparative Gender)*

Students may pursue fields in Historiography, focusing on major historiographical questions, with special focus on the turn to cultural history, and the challenges of poststructuralism and postcolonial theory. Students may also prepare a field in Comparative Gender, to include an overview of the historiography on women and gender. Students who work on this field with me will usually make the history of European women and gender a part of their comparative focus and will consult with a specialist of another area of the world to complete their preparation.
