Sandra Joshel: Areas of Graduate Study
Covers the fields of the Middle and Late Roman Republic, the Early Roman Empire, and the Later Roman Empire. Thematically, the program in republican and early imperial Rome focuses on social and cultural history, especially the history of slavery at Rome. In addition to its full sequence of courses on major Latin and Greek authors, the Department of Classics offer courses in Roman culture, society, history, and Roman historiography . Students interested in the late empire may enroll in seminars in Late Antiquity or in some cases arrange reading courses on select topics, such as the eastern provinces (esp. Anatolia and Syria), relations with Persia, and the history of Christianity within the high and late empire.
