Fellowships & Scholarships: Current Students
Applicants for these prizes must be enrolled in the History Graduate Program.
Departmental Awards
The History Department awards a number of fellowships to its students
each year from a diverse array of funds. A direct application is required
for several of these awards, while for others the recipient(s) is chosen
from among qualified graduate students by a faculty committee without
formal application on the part of the student.
Non-Departmental Awards
Additionally, there are countless fellowships available through the Graduate
School and other outside sources to support graduate study. The list below
is far from exhaustive, but represents those fellowships our students
have most consistently won. Links to foundations and to online funding
searches may be found
online.
Aldon Duane Bell Award in Women's History
In 1997 an anonymous donor established the Aldon Duane Bell Award in Women's History in memory of Aldon D. Bell, in honor of his long-standing commitment to women's history and women studies. Professor Bell served as a member of the History Department's faculty from 1969 until his death in 1992. He also served for six years as Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. While Dean, he guided the creation of the University's Women Studies Program. The award consists of a one-year fellowship in the amount of $10,000 and a tuition waiver. The award is intended to recognize academic achievement and scholarly promise in women's history or women studies. Any currently enrolled History graduate student, who is embarking on or completing work in women's history or women studies, may apply for this award.

Burg Graduate Student Scholarship Fund in History. The aim of this award is to support "exploratory" dissertation research. To this end, it may be used alone or to supplement research funding secured elsewhere. Awards are limited to costs associated with travel to research collections (typically round-trip airfare) and are not to exceed $750. The number of awards made each year will depend upon the money available in the scholarship fund. Students must apply directly for this award.
